about

Ryan composed this music as score to a short film (Science in America) featuring and released by Neil deGrasse Tyson. In the film, Tyson speaks about the fundamental importance of science to the United States and human civilization at large; he also advocates for science to be neither ignored nor politicized. Here’s what he typed when debuting the film on his Facebook page on April 19, 2017:

“Dear Facebook Universe
I offer this four-minute video on “Science in America” containing what may be the most important words I have ever spoken.
As always, but especially these days, keep looking up.
—Neil deGrasse Tyson”

Ryan’s music for the film opens with a string ensemble, church pipe organ, and upright piano, and then evolves into a sequence of cues that add sub bass, low brass, cellos, flutes, taiko drum, and a reversed Rhodes piano. The film was produced by Redglass Pictures, and had been viewed more than 53 million times on Facebook as of Earth Day 2018.

Ryan Whittier Virginia

Music composer.

For You Alone is my first solo music release, a piano album labor of love I've worked on for more than 15 years. Meant to be listened to alone in a single sitting, I hope it brings you a sense of peace, balance, and restoration.

I've scored short films, theatre productions, and feature length films over the last 20+ years.
